How societal values are translated in bovine bodies

Global demand for meat is growing. Studies show meat consumption could increase by 70 % by 2050. This puts the focus on farmed animal production with a particular emphasis on animal genomics, breeding, and genetic resources. The EU-funded The BoS project will explore genomics technologies. Specifically, it will analyse how societal values are being translated in bovine bodies. The project will answer the following questions: How are values such as health, environment or biodiversity incorporated in cattle selection and reproduction? Conversely, how are bodies transformed by these values, and through which techniques and practices? The findings will provide a political anthropology of the genomics infrastructure contributing to the sociology of scientific knowledge.
